Where was the film The Girl with the Red Scarf shot? (Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım)

Directed by Atıf Yılmaz, The Girl with the Red Scarf, which was released in 1977, is based on a novel with the same name by the Kyrgyz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov, starring Türkan Şoray, Kadir İnanır and Ahmet Mekin. The film also features Nurhan Nur, Hülya Tüğlu and İhsan Yüce as supporting actors.

The Girl with the Red Scarf is one of the most popular film in Turkish cinema and was filmed in different parts of the province of Osmania, which at that time was connected with the province of Adana. The ancient city of Castabala with its 2,000 years of history is also one of the filming locations. The film used a part of the road located closer to the ancient city rather than to the city center. The center of the city itself, which at that time was a district, was not pictured in the film.

12 years ago, artists opposed a plan to build a cement plant 500 meters from the ancient city of Kastabala.

Film directors Zeki Ökten and Sunar Kural Aytuna, film actors Tarık Akan, Rutkay Aziz, Nur Sürer, Bülent Kayabaş, Menderes Samancılar, Çetin Öner, Taner Barlas, writer Aydın Boysan and Ülkü Ayvaz, Prof. Türkan Saivaz, Prof. Çoşkun Özdemir, prof. Aydın Aytuna, prof. Dr. Güven Arsebück and prof. Türkel Minibash made a declaration. As a result of attempts made in the area which is a bird’s paradise, in 2013 the court ordered the suspension to build the facility.

Osmaniye:

With a population of 522,175 people – Osmaniye was actually founded on August 20, 1865. This precious Çukurova area, which is also a bird’s paradise, was first a province during the republic period and remained a province until June 1933. Osmania on this day was abolished and associated with Adana. Before the election of the local administration held on November 3, 1996, it was put on the agenda as a province and in the vote held on October 23 of the same year in Grand National Assembly of Turkey, it was decided that it would be a province.

The ancient city of Castabala

The city, whose ancient name was Hierapolis, is located 12 km from the Osmaniye province in the southeast of Anatolia. It is located in the north-west, along the road, the town of Cevdetiye – the Karatepe Museum, in the middle of the villages of Kesburun, Bakhche and Kazmak. Kastabala bears the same name as Pamukkale, which is today in Denizli, along with a view of a small plain near the Ceyhan River (Pyramos).  Surface finds from the Cilicia region, where this city is also located, helped datıng the city which come from different periods between the 2nd millennium BC and the Roman Empire – late Roman periods. However, research on this matter is still underway.

The results of the ongoing excavations begun in 2009 at Castabala have already changed the city’s history today. The ancient city is now dated to the Late Neolithic – Early Eneolithic. The existence of findings dating back to the fourth century BC also alters the missing information about Castabala and the archeology of the region.  Excavations and surveys carried out in the city have shown that the boundaries of this place encompass a fertile plain that stretches between the Ceyhan River in the south, Karatepe in the north, and the Kirmitly bird sanctuary in the west.Cement factories and dams, which it is desirable to build in different parts of the city, influence archaeological research.
